The main problem, believe in the Kremlin, is “discrimination against the members of the Council”
The Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov said that Russia is ready to continue the work of the Council of Europe only if the organization completely eradicate discrimination of the participating countries. He said this to journalists today, on September 21, reports, citing
“As for the Council of Europe, Russia wants to remain in the Council of Europe, in which we entered. Referring to the Council of Europe, the Charter of which it is recorded that in all its structures each country has equal rights,” he said.
“No member of the Council of Europe cannot be discriminated. In this CoE we are ready to work on. Everything else depends on the members of the Council of Europe”, – said Lavrov.
Earlier, the speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko said that Russia is seriously considering the option of withdrawal from the Council of Europe.
Recall, the Russian delegation to the PACE was deprived of a number of powers, including voting rights, in April 2014 due to the annexation of the Crimea and aggression in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. Then the Russian delegation has suspended its work in the Assembly in protest. Moscow responded with a statement that the current regulations harm the interests of the PACE delegations of individual countries and allows others to make discriminatory decisions – for example, to deny the right to vote, to exclude from participation in the governing bodies of the Assembly and of the various monitoring missions, as it was with the Russian delegation.
